Guadalupe Guevara-Diaz, 27, of Brentwood, was arrested on Wednesday, Nov. 18, after officers responded to the parking lot of the Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove in response to a 911 call reporting to young children alone in a vehicle, Suffolk County Police said.

When officers arrived on the scene around 6 p.m., they found two children, a 9-year-old girl, and a 3-year-old boy, alone in a parked 2008 Nissan Pathfinder, according to police.

An investigation determined the children had been alone inside the vehicle which was not running for about 30 minutes while their mother shopped inside the mall.

The temperature at the time was 37 degrees, police said.

Guevara-Diaz was charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

She was held overnight and is due to be arraigned in court on Thursday, Nov. 19.

Child Protective Services were notified and the children were released to a friend of the family.
